Over six months in 2023-2024, I created a series of tip assets for the new Air New Zealand 787 in-flight entertainment units.
The tips were created to help the passenger orient themselves with the seat and its features across the entirely new cabin design: Business Premier, Premium Economy, Economy Stretch, Economy Skycouch and Economy. The in-flight entertainment system in the new cabins is extremely flexible, so Air New Zealand was able to customise the passenger experience to a level that was not available on previous systems.
As this was the first time Air New Zealand or I had undertaken a project like this, there were a fair amount of challenges that arose as we progressed. Air New Zealand had a rough idea of art direction and scope, so I was able to drive quite a lot of the project planning and art direction. I found using a rapid/iterative rendered preview cycle really helped the team make decisions, especially when there were several stakeholders involved
The final assets were delivered in 16bit per channel ProRes, so the Air New Zealand team could re-output as needed to suit the requirements of the IFE system. All scenes were set up in Lightwave and rendered in Octane Render. Post processing using After Effects and a healthy amount of Neat Video.
